Judy Krupp returns to Bhutan to lead a six-night Retreat focusing on nurturing asanas and meditation.

Uma Paro in Bhutan continues to secure its reputation as one of the most unique Yoga locations in the world. With dedicated Yoga facilities, in addition to a full-service holistic spa and healthful, sophisticated cuisine, this is a wellness opportunity that stands apart from the crowd.

From 9th to 15th January 2010 Uma Paro will be welcoming Judy Krupp, a well known Sydney-based teacher whose likeable humour and nurturing style has inspired and made devotees of many, from beginners to the experienced. This will be the third time she has worked at Uma Paro, drawn by the mountains and clarity of the air to lead what looks like what will be another sell-out COMO Shambhala Yoga Retreat.

Judy has over 20 years experience as a teacher and is founder of The Yoga Room based on Sydney’s North Shore. Her teaching reflects her original training in the Iyengar system and work as a myotherapy body therapist to help strengthen habit-prone bodies and increase flexibility. This is excellent for people who are new to Yoga.
In addition, Judy helps focus the mind for meditation. She does this both through her artful teaching, and also by asking each guest to make the most of the privileged environment which is Uma Paro. Bhutan offers a memorable opportunity to escape the daily grind, high up in the mountains where few ever tread.

All Retreat guests are therefore invited to explore the countryside and culture more deeply, with an English-speaking Uma Paro guide provided for this purpose. The program includes walks through local scenery, to monasteries and valleys. There will be a visit to Bhutan’s oldest temple from the 8th century Kyichu Lhakhang with lunch at Traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, a pilgrimage to Bhutan’s most sacred site known as Taktsang monastery (Tiger’s Nest) and a picnic at Rinpung Dzong, Paro’s majestic government and monastic centre.

Throughout their stay guests are free to enjoy Uma Paro’s menus of healthful, locally sourced cuisine. Retreat guests can also make the most of Uma Paro’s holistic COMO Shambhala Retreat where they can experience a Traditional Hot Stone Bath followed by a COMO Shambhala massage. Others will enjoy making the most of Uma Paros’ extensive Ayurvedic treatments.

Prices start at $3,227, which includes 21 hours of Yoga and meditation instruction between 9th and 14th January 2010, accommodation, return airport transfers, three cultural excursions, daily breakfast, lunch and two dinners (beverages not included) as well as government tax, visa fees and 10% service charge.

Please note Uma Paro can provide extensive travel assistance, including advice on visas and Drukair flights into Bhutan.

- 3 nights Local Hotels,
- 6 nights Uma Paro
-1 night Bumdra Camp
March 13th to 23rd 2009

This ten-night inclusive adventure in the Dragon Kingdom brings together the very best of Uma Paro’s most popular experiences into one itinerary. The Central Bhutan tour coupled with deeper exploration of the hinterland around Uma Paro, offer travelers the opportunity to experience this Himalayan kingdom’s inimitable Buddhist culture at a deep and comprehensive level and culminates in an overnight camping trek high above the Tiger’s Nest.

The tour beyond Uma Paro (three nights in two locally owned hotels – both clean but basic), journeys deep into the Kingdom’s heartland exploring three distinctly different but important valleys – the bustling capital of Thimpu sprawls in its valley dotted with peerless national monuments, museums and markets, the two magnificent dzongs (huge fortress-like monasteries), the unspoilt valley of Haa and the majestic rivers of the almost tropical Punakha/Wangdue valley.

Our local guides at Uma Paro have researched a fabulous two day overnight camping trek which encompasses a night in a magnificently located wilderness campsite high in the Himalaya and whole new way of visiting the inimitable

Taktsang Goemba – the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Our pilgrimage describes a circuit using remote mountain paths, where very few foreigners have ever set foot, to eventually approach the Tiger’s Nest from our campsite above the clouds near Bumdra Monastery via several other remote and spectacularly perched monasteries and temples. The two day adventure includes two picnic lunches, a camp dinner and breakfast, mineral water, ponies, the services of two experienced local Uma guides and cooks, all tentage, kitbag for packing all personal kit on the ponies, first-aid kit and mattresses for sleeping. Himalayan Explorer & Bumdra Camp 10 Nights March 2009 PB

Accompanied by an experienced local guide this combination of spectacular drives, unique nature walks and fascinating temple and monastery visits makes this an unforgettable adventure in the land above the clouds. To get the most from this experience you should be active, reasonably fit and enjoy the great outdoors.

- 10 NIGHT FULLBOARD PACKAGE
(8 nights Uma Paro & 2 nights Metropolitan Bangkok)
December 1st to 11th 2009

In this two centre, ten-night package, enjoy the best of Asia’s most dynamic capital, staying at the Metropolitan Bangkok for a night of revelry on your way to and from Uma Paro, Bhutan. It couldn’t be easier: we take care of your four hour-long flights from Bangkok to Paro, and all transfers, making the route to Shangri-La easier than ever before.

The combination is perfect for those who want to shop, eat and indulge before retreating to the quiet and inspiring Himalayan vistas to experience complete immersion in Bhutan’s extraordinary landscape and cultural heritage – and perhaps some more shopping for that unique Christmas gift from the Land of the Thunderdragon – maybe an elaborate thangkha painting, some woven fabric, a selection of fabulous postage stamps, a singing bowl or a prayer wheel.

Our exploration comprises three days of guided walks through the Paro Valley, visiting the Taktsang ‘Tiger’s Nest’ Monastery, the National Museum, Drukgyel Dzong and the ancient temple of Kyichu Lhakhang. At each site, guests will be exposed to the subtle intricacies of this ancient Buddhist land, learning about its people, culture and deep-set religious traditions. This aspect of Bhutanese society is made vital with time for witnessing a puja, or worship, in a local monastery, meeting with monks, listening to their age-old chants, providing a chance to witness yet more of their exquisite arts tradition (the 13 traditional arts and crafts – Zorig Chusom). To further experience Bhutan’s staggering Himalayan landscape, shoppers can choose to spend a day at the weekend market and handicraft shops in the capital, Thimphu. In addition, take a day trip to the remote Haa valley where the Bhutanese continue their rural existences amid the emerald fields and forests where time has stood still for decades. Returning to our comfortable home in the Himalaya, Uma Paro, after each day’s adventures – accommodation is included on a full-board basis in Bhutan, excluding beverages – there is plenty of free time to relax, enjoying the peace, views and the swimming pool.

DAY 1 Monday 1st December
Arrival at Bangkok International Airport check-in at the Metropolitan Bangkok Our airport limousine service will ensure that you arrive in style at the Metropolitan Hotel Bangkok where our guest services staff are on hand to assist with shopping and sightseeing programs. Perhaps you would rather just relax in the COMO Shambhala health club — our largest city retreat yet. After a sumptuous five-course dinner at our award-winning Cy’an restaurant, a night of fun awaits either at the Met Bar or any one of the many nightspots for which Bangkok is famous.
Overnight: Metropolitan Bangkok

DAY 2 Tuesday 2nd December
Mountain flight, arrival, check-in, show round and easy walk. The morning flight to Bhutan is spectacular. It approaches the Himalayan range — Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga can be seen — before the final descent into the Paro Valley. Uma Paro staff will welcome you at the airport for the 10-minute transfer to the property. We invite you for a short, guided walk in the afternoon in and around Uma Paro for orientation and acclimatisation.
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 3 Wednesday 3rd December
Daywalk Zurig Dzong, Rinpung Dzong, Ta Dzong, Paro Town & Kyichu Lhakhang Wind through pine forests high above Uma Paro to the pretty grounds of the fortress-like monastery of Zuri Dzong. Traverse across to Ta Dzong, housing Bhutan’s National Museum (open Tuesday-Saturday) with magnificent views over Paro, and on down to visit Rinpung Dzong – ‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’. The trail then leads across Paro Chhu (river) via a traditional covered bridge (Nyamai Zam) and then past the main archery ground, Ugyen Pelri Palace and into Paro town. A few kilometers north of Paro, we pay our respects at Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree which bears fruit all year round.
Duration: 5 – 7 hours (depending on time spent in National Museum and Paro)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 4 Thursday 4th December
A Day Out in the Haa Valley Day Start early for the drive to Haa via Chele La (pass) which at 3810m is the highest road pass in Bhutan, snaking upwards through blue pine and rhododendron (Etho Metho) forests for 35km. On a clear day the view sweeps away to snow-dome of Bhutan’s highest peak Mt Jhomolhari (7314m). After a bracing walk along the prayer flag bedecked ridge it is down into Haa (by bike if you prefer) – the whole drive should take no more than 2.5 hours. Wangchulo Dzong is presently occupied by the Indian Army, however this makes for a quirky experience.
Having visited the bazaar it is a short walk along the Haa Chhu (river) to a picnic spot. At Lhakhang Karpo (the White Temple), many young monks await to offer a warm, noisy welcome and may accompany us to the nearby Lhakhang Nagpo (the Black Temple). The Haa valley only opened to foreigners in 2002 due to its proximity to the border with Sikkim and Tibet. This unspoilt valley harks back to a simpler more traditional time. For those who would rather a walk than to visit Haa we recommend a 3-4 hour hike up to Kili Goemba an ancient nunnery, topping out at Chele La. A further option, once back (by vehicle or bike) in the Paro Valley, time permitting, is a 20 minute walk out to the dramatically positioned Dzongdrakha Goemba complex.
Duration: 7 – 9 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 5 Friday 5th December
Free Day For relaxing around Uma Paro enjoying the facilities (swimming pool, steam room, gym, daily complimentary yoga classes etc) or perhaps trying some other activity like the Bhutanese national sport of archery, or maybe a therapy such as the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath.
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 6 Saturday 6th December
Day Out in Thimpu The capital of Bhutan sprawls up the wooded western hillside of the Wang Chhu. The centre of government, religion and commerce, Thimpu is a bustling town where traditional ways mingle with modern introductions. The drive from Uma Paro to the capital takes about 1.5 hours and sights worth seeing include the following, time and local conditions permitting:

Market Days: Thimpu’s main markets day is Saturday and can easily lose a couple of hours wandering amongst the colourful stalls before heading into town for more shopping opportunities.
BBS Tower Viewpoint and Takin Compound: On the way to the viewpoint over Thimpu is the home of Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin, a strange looking beast which some say looks like a beestung moose.
National Memorial Chorten: Bhutan’s third king, H.M. Jigme Dorji Wangchuck who had wished to erect a monument to world peace and prosperity, died before his plan came to fruition. However, the Royal Family and Cabinet resolved to fulfill his wishes and erect a memorial that would perpetuate his memory and also serve as a monument to peace.
View of Trashi Chhoe Dzong: the “fortress of the glorious religion”, was initially erected in 1641 and rebuilt by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck in the 1960s. Tashi Chhoe Dzong houses some ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body. Entrance may be granted to guests only after 5pm but the nine hole golf course alongside makes for a quirky photo opportunity.
National Institute of Traditional Medicine: Still dispensing traditional herbal and other medicines, made from plants, minerals, animal parts, precious metals and gems. A working facility for research and the treatment of local people the tour is fascinating (Open Monday to Friday).
National Textile Museum: Providing an insight into the living national art of weaving this museum exhibits fine examples of all the major weaving techniques and the changing styles of gho and kira over the years, with weavers demonstrating their skills on traditional back looms (Open Tuesday-Friday and half day at the weekends).
Folk Heritage Museum: If there is still time we may visit this replica of a traditional Bhutanese house as it would have looked 100 years ago and as many Bhutanese families still live to this day (Open Monday to Friday) Please note museum, monastery, temple and dzong opening days and times can and do vary with national holidays and events such a visit by a member of the Royal Family or auspicious ceremonies
Duration: 7 – 10 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Guided with picnic or sample typical Bhutanese fare at own expense in local restaurant
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 7 Sunday 7th December
Paro local weekend market, Paro town shopping and Bhutanese farmhouse visit An early morning start ensures we reach the local market at the best time and whilst on a smaller scale than Thimpu’s market it is no less interesting with items to look out for including fresh and dried chillies, chugo the hard yak cheese threaded onto strings and chewed by young and old alike. Traditional bamboo bows and arrows also make for great gifts and these can be found in various local shops along with colourful prayer flags and excellent examples of typical woven fabrics used to make the traditional dress – Gho for men and Kira for women. Later our friendly farmer, Tshering, will show you round his farm in the valley and introduce you to his family before offering you a cup of tea.
Duration: 5 – 6 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 8 Monday 8th December
Chhubjakhar Monastery Walk. Ascend from Uma Paro through blue pine forest to a viewpoint amongst prayer flags on ridge. The path continues up the ridge then traverses to Gemjo La Goemba (monastery) high above Uma. Hopefully one or both of our old friends Mindu and Passang will be there to meet us. A wide plateau flanked by orchards and forest is reached after a short climb from the monastery. Linger here awhile soaking up the magnificent mountain views and exploring the ruined fortress, deserted farmhouses and nearby Chhubjakhar monastery. There is now the option to either head off on a longer walk for further exploration or turn back for Uma Paro.
Duration: 5 – 7 hours depending on which option is taken
Difficulty: Moderate
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 9 Tuesday 9th December
Highlights of the Paro Valley – Taktsang Walk & Drukgyel Dzong. One of the most amazing and important pieces of architecture in Bhutan, Taktsang Goemba defies logic, gravity, and reason. Legend has it that this cliffside was where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) landed on the back of a flying tigress, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet.

To avoid the hot sun an early start is advisable for the two-hour climb, via the cafeteria, to the Tiger’s Nest viewpoint. Descend steeply, then climb up to the monastery, passing a waterfall (visit monastery if it is open – with sufficient notice Uma Paro can arrange a permit). We retrace our steps or alternatively (time permitting) head further up to several remote temples and monasteries. Drive further up the valley to Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1644 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to control northern route to Tibet. The route is picturesque, and the site of dzong magnificent (from here, only two-day hike to the border with Tibet, dominated by Mt Jhomalhari). This evening you are invited for a firelit farewell dinner in our courtyard at Uma Paro.

Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard (ascent should not be attempted until at least third day in Bhutan, after acclimatization has occurred, riding ponies are available at an additional charge)

If you want to really dig deep, there are few better ways to explore than by bike.

From 7th to 17th July 2008, Uma Paro (in conjunction with Kona Bikes) is offering a small group biking adventure leading you through five different valleys. The route takes in cultural road rides, remote off-road trails, huge freewheel descents and easy river side circuits.

Highlights will include the country’s first designated mountain biking trail in Punakha, a descent from the kingdom’s highest road pass – Chele La, at 3810 metres – and the magical Paro, Phobjikha, Punakha and Haa valleys.

We will stop at local markets, remote villages and monasteries, including Bhutan’s iconic Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang).

The itinerary includes ten cycling tours, ranging from 10kms (as a warm-up) to 120kms a day. This may appear short to some, but the mountain terrain and high altitude will provide a challenge even to the experienced.

A support vehicle will be accompanying the group on most days, taking us up to each pass before we can enjoy delicious freewheels as we traverse the country, and offering a ride do anyone in need of a rest.

You will be able to enjoy the luxury of Uma Paro for six nights. For the remaining four nights, we have selected simple local hotels located en route.

This is an ideal opportunity for single travellers to join a small group (max. 12 people), and our all-inclusive itinerary offers participants easy access, including the arrangement of all visa formalities.

Two experienced Uma Paro guides will be with the group at all times. One of them is COMO Hotels and Resorts Activities Director, Phil Bowen, who personally researched the itinerary, will accompany the adventure. This former pearl diver, rally driver, windsurfing instructor, photographer, trekking and adventure guide and, of course, keen mountain biker, has travelled the seven continents from Yemen to Antarctica.

‘Mountains and Monasteries – Bhutan by Bike’ is available from $3,946 (single occupancy, full board). Complimentary equipment includes a Kona Cinder Cone 2008 mountain bike, gloves and helmet.

- 10 NIGHT FULLBOARD PACKAGE
(3 Nights Camping & 7 nights at Uma Paro)
April 17th to 27th 2008
This ten night special small group adventure is for those travelers who have time to enjoy the best of both worlds – a classic, challenging wilderness trek combined with a deep experience of the Bhutanese people and their culture.
Our experienced guides lead four separate days out in the Paro valley and the remote and unspoilt Haa valley incorporating such highlights as, Taktsang ‘Tiger’s Nest’ Monastery, the National Museum, Drukgyel Dzong and the ancient temple of Kyichu Lhakhang. Exploring mainly on foot but also by vehicle and returning to the comfort of Uma Paro each evening – accommodation is included on a full-board basis, excluding beverages – there is plenty of free time to relax, enjoying the peace, views, swimming pool, spa and daily yoga class.

For generations the Druk Path was an important trading link between Paro and Thimpu, crossing the chain of remote mountains that separates the two valleys. The trail goes as high as 13,800 ft (or 4100metres) and in clear weather the panoramic views of the Himalaya are breathtaking throughout. Our four-day trek, though short, is challenging and begins with an ascent through apple orchards and ancient pine forest past a pre-Buddhist temple to Jele Dzong perched on a grassy ridge dotted with yaks. Day two provides the biggest challenge and promises a magnificent day in the mountains, crossing a small pass marked with prayer flags, a reminder of the strong Buddhist culture of the Kingdom. The trek then follows a ridge through dwarf rhododendron and pine, passing a series of small lakes before heading up above the treeline. The final descent via the monasteries at Phadjoding leads into Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan, where we enjoy a brief sightseeing program before returning to Paro. In days gone by the route was used as a corporeal punishment for Bhutanese soldiers who were made to complete the four-day trek in a single day.

Special Group Departure Druk Path 10 Nights Edition April 2008 PB

This is an active itinerary in general and because of this and the heights reached on this trek, this trip has accordingly been graded as a moderate to hard trekking adventure: you will need to be healthy and fit to gain the most from the experience.

DAY 1 Thursday April 17

Fly Bangkok to Paro, Arrival at Paro International Airport, Uma Paro check-in, show round & easy walk After the awe-inspiring early morning mountain flight from Bangkok Uma Paro staff will welcome you at the airport for the 10 minute transfer to the property. We invite you for a short, guided walk in the afternoon in and around Uma Paro for orientation and acclimatisation purposes.

Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 2 Friday April 18

A few kilometres north of Paro, we pay our respects at Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree that bears fruit all year round.

Duration: 5 – 7 hours (depending on time spent in National Museum and Paro)

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Guided with picnic

Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 3 Saturday April 19
Floating Goddess Day Trek A magical and memorable day begins with a drive along the peaceful Do Chhu (river) Valley, up a rough track past tiny hamlets to the trailhead. Deep in ancient forest we follow the rushing course of the Do Chhu deeper into this remote and untouched valley – very few foreigners have passed this way. In the season the flowering rhododendron provide a riot of colour and on a warm day pilgrims may be tempted into a refreshing dip in one of many swimming holes. Towards the head of the valley the trail switchbacks as it steepens and Chumbu Monastery can be glimpsed above with craggy peaks looming behind. The monks at this spectacularly positioned and remote monastery afford all pilgrims a warm welcome particularly if they are bearing small gifts and offerings for the supernatural statue of the ‘Flying Yogini’, that seemingly floats in the air. Having paid our respects we climb higher to a beautiful mountain lake before bidding the monks a fond farewell and heading for home.

Duration: 7-8 hours

Difficulty: Moderate

Guided with picnic

Overnight: Uma Paro

DAY 4 Sunday April 20

A Day Out in the Haa Valley Day Start early for the drive to Haa via Chele La (pass) which at 3810m is the highest road pass in Bhutan, snaking upwards through blue pine and rhododendron (Etho Metho) forests for 35km. On a clear day the view sweeps away to snow-dome of Bhutan’s highest peak Mt Jhomolhari (7314m). After a bracing walk along the prayer flag bedecked ridge it is down into Haa – the whole drive should take no more than 2.5 hours. Wangchulo Dzong is presently occupied by the Indian Army, however this makes for a quirky experience. Having visited the bazaar it is a short walk (or bike ride) along the Haa Chhu (river) to a picnic spot. Time permitting, once back in the Paro Valley, a further option is a 20 minute walk out to the dramatically positioned Dzongdrakha Goemba complex.

DAY 5 Monday April 21 : Uma Paro (2360m) To Jele Dzong (3450m)

Day 1 Trek The trek starts from the lobby at Uma Paro, heading up past Gemjola Monastery and Chhubjakhar Monastery then winding gradually uphill through apple orchards, smallholdings and ancient pine forest to a whaleback ridge. The altitude gain today is significant so it is recommended that you walk at a slow and steady pace. Tonight’s camp is in a yak pasture below Jele Dzong which is perched on the ridge itself and whose monks welcome visitors. The dzong was the former residence of one Ngawang Chhogyel (1465-1540), cousin of the famous saint Lama Drukpa Kinley with the colourful moniker, the Divine Madman. The views of Paro town far below and of mount Jhomalhari (7314m) are breathtaking on a clear day. The views of Paro town far below and of mount Jhomalhari (7314m) are breathtaking on a clear day.

DAY 6 Tuesday April 22 : Jele Dzong (3450m) To Jimilang Tsho (3870m)

Day 2 Trek Cross the Jele La (3490m) and descend below the ridgeline to walk through forest of pine and rhododendron before climbing to reach a yak herders’ pasture and possible picnic spot at Jangchu Lakha (3780m) with great views of the Himalayan range. In the afternoon follow the undulating ridgeline to a saddle at 4,020 metres and then continue to the Jangchu La pass at (4180m). From here it is a steep descent to camp at Jimilang Tsho Lake (3880m). The lake is known to house a large number of trout, believed to have been introduced by the British in the last century. From near the camp there are good mountain views including the sacred peak of Jichu Drake (6989m).

DAY 7 Wednesday April 23 : Jimilang Tsho (3880m) To Simkotra Tsho (4110m)

Day 3 Trek Today is much shorter so enjoy a leisurely breakfast by the lake and relax for a while. The ascent from the lake is steep at times, through dwarf rhododendron and over a spur to the lake of Janye Tsho. As the trail winds and undulates trekkers are rewarded with views across the deep valley to the route from two days ago and to Jele Dzong, now a tiny white dot in the distance. Crossing one final spur the Simkotra Tsho (4110m) can be seen below, the camp for night is by this lake.

Day 4 Trek This morning begins with an ascent to a small saddle at 4150 metres before descending to another small lake then climbing to the Phume La pass (4210m) which is adorned with prayer flags. Again there are fine views of the Bhutan Himalaya from here plus the first view of Thimphu far below. The trail now descends all the way first to the pilgrim site at Phajoding (3870m) then into pine and juniper forest descending all the way to the road head at Motithang on the outskirts of Thimphu. The rest of the afternoon can be spent sightseeing in Thimphu, before returning to Uma Paro.

DAY 10 Saturday April 26
Highlights of the Paro Valley – Taktsang Walk, Drukgyel Dzong & Kyichu Lhakhang One of the most amazing and important pieces of architecture in Bhutan, Taktsang Goemba defies logic, gravity, and reason.

On the 17km drive back to Paro we pay our respects at Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree which bears fruit all year round. This evening you are invited for a firelit farewell dinner in our courtyard at Uma Paro.

Duration: 7 – 8 hours

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard (ascent should not to be attempted until at least third day in Bhutan, after acclimatization has occurred)
