The Sarojin, Thailand’s award-winning 56 boutique residence property, has won the 2009 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the second consecutive year. This prestigious accolade was awarded to the resort’s signature restaurant, Ficus, for demonstrating a dedication to wine, a well-chosen selection of quality wine producers, and a thematic match with its menu items in both price and style.

The Sarojin features an extraordinary wine cellar with over 200 vintages from both the old and new worlds. This is complemented by the availability of 20 wines by the glass – Le Verre de Vin, the world’s most advanced wine and champagne preservation system. Le Verre de Vin is capable of preserving an unlimited number of still, sparkling and fortified wines and is available at The Sarojin’s Ficus and Edge restaurants. The Sarojin’s Wine Director, Sam Bonifant, shares his passion for wine with the resort’s British owners, Kate and Andrew Kemp; together they have created an award-winning wine list that emphasises quality and affordability and which perfectly complements the restaurants’ à la carte cuisine.

Comments Kate Kemp, “We’re very proud of our wine selection and pay great attention to vintage, proper storage, appropriate food pairing and serving, criteria that are particularly important in maintaining fine wines in a tropical climate. Wine Spectator’s 2009 Award of Excellence is testament to our dedication in providing the very best and to the very positive feedback that we receive from our guests.”

Adds Sam Bonifant, “You can have the best wine in the world but if it is exposed to the heat for too long the result can be a total disaster. Also, the old principles of what wine went best with which dish, were really quite limited. We constantly challenge ourselves to pair the best selection with the myriad of flavours offered by the quality of our cuisine.”

Complementing the wine menu is The Sarojin’s à la carte cuisine, a delectable choice of Asian and continental dishes, prepared by Executive Chef Khun Jui and his team. Enhancing The Sarojin’s culinary offerings is the resort’s ability to stage extraordinary dining experiences “just for 2,” engineered by their very own Imagineer, Jowell Philemond-Montout. As the ultimate personal concierge, Jowell works with the chefs to turn guests’ culinary desires into reality, creating tailor-made settings for even greater appeal and enjoyment; for example, guests can choose from a candlelit degustation dinner by a waterfall, or around the resort’s ancient Ficus tree; a private beach barbecue by the Andaman Sea; Thai culinary cooking lessons along the Takuapa River; a delicious lunch at one of the pool island pavilions, or an intimate gourmet dinner in the privacy of their own private dining sala. For the more adventurous, gourmet safari-style breakfasts and lunches can be arranged for day excursions in one of the five national parks bordering The Sarojin, or for a decadent day at sea, couples can indulge in a champagne and oyster spread on board the resort’s Lady Sarojin luxury charter yacht.

The 2009 Wine Spectator Award for Excellence is indicative of The Sarojin’s exceptional level of personalised service and attention to detail. The resort’s name is inspired by the mythical Lady Sarojin, the daughter of a prominent Thai nobleman who was regarded as the perfect host and whose household became famous for its hospitality. The Sarojin’s goal is to reflect this legacy by providing an experience that is reminiscent of staying at a friend’s private estate. It is located directly on a secluded 7 mile white sand beach, just 55 minutes drive north of Phuket Airport and 7km north of Khao Lak centre in the Phang Nga province of Thailand. Children under 12 years are not permitted to stay at The Sarojin.

The Sarojin Thailand, a member of Vistuoso Hotels and consistently voted one of the world’s most luxurious and romantic boutique resorts, knows how to spoil its guests, especially as its legendary ‘Imagineer’ is available to cater to their every whim.No other resort offers such highly personalised service, where Martinique-born Jowell Philemond-Montout sets out to ensure the holiday dreams of every single guest are met, no matter how big or small.

Jowell traded his background as a performer with the Moulin Rouge for Khao Lak and an elegant, pale linen suit, turning his creative passion into making people happy and giving them a truly memorable holiday, making him a hit with guests at The Sarojin.

If you want to enjoy champagne and oysters on a secluded beach at sunset, after kayaking across to Pakarang Cape where a guide will greet you and escort you to your ‘front row seat’, then Jowell is your man. A trek through the jungles on an elephant with a picnic by the waterfall in Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park – no problem!

Jowell’s ability to cater to the imagination of guests is limitless, however, as a general guide he has listed some of the top activities that he recommends to enjoy this piece of paradise nestled between a secluded beach and five national parks in Khao Lak.

The Imagineer’s top tips include:-

The stunning Lady Sarojin yacht awaits your arrival for a sunset cruise where cocktails and canapés are served while the sun slips under the horizon, delivering you to a barefoot private dinner where your own chef prepares what you wish demonstration-style in an exquisite romantic setting. As you finish dessert, you are invited to celebrate your next dream by lighting and flying a Thai spirit balloon, which is believed to carry your wishes to the Gods.

Take a marine adventure to Phang Nga Bay, canoeing through the sea caves of its dramatic limestone islands to discover the sea gypsy village (Koh Panyee) in its hidden lagoons, built overwater on stilts. Using a local fisherman’s longtail boat, you will also see historic Wat Thamsuwankuha, the temple set in a giant cave which houses a 15 metre long reclining buddha, the largest in Southern Thailand.

Of all the decadent treatments, the ‘faa fait’ massage (four hand massage) by two of the ‘Pathways’ therapists would have to be the most indulgent and relaxing of all time. If you are too blissed out to move, Jowell can even arrange a lunch to be enjoyed in the treatment room!

An excursion to the Similan Islands on the Lady Sarojin is akin to a scene from a movie – your own private snorkelling trip to jewel-like islands in turquoise waters teeming with marine life, emerging to enjoy a gourmet lunch and wine, naturally!

If, like most Australians, you love Thai food, then travel by traditional pleat boat to check out the local markets with your personal guide to buy the best produce, and learn to cook authentic Thai cuisine in a stunning outdoor setting in the national park, before you sample it with your partner or friends.

For the opportunity to experience some of these activities, The Sarojin is currently offering a special package, running from May to October 2008.

Guests staying for two nights in a Sarojin Suite enjoy an additional night free, and guests staying for four nights, enjoy an additional two nights free, plus one elephant trek “just for two” and one 60 minute spa massage per person. Guests staying in a Pool Residence for four nights enjoy an additional two nights free, and those staying in a Garden residence staying two nights enjoy as many nights again free. Reservations: reservations@sarojin.com Tel: +66(0)76 427 900

Located in Khao Lak, just one hour north of Phuket Airport, The Sarojin is a 56 room property offering plunge pools, spa pools, intimate couples baths, rainfall showers, private gardens, spa, fitness facilities, dining tables set in extraordinary locations and its own team of guides, a luxury yacht and adventure cars. The Sarojin is the vision of the well-travelled directors of WhiteKaps Resort Co. Ltd – a registered Thai company with investors from Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and the UK – and the concept behind this intimate hotel is that it offers an experience reminiscent of staying at a friend’s private estate rather than at an international resort.
The Sarojin won Asia’s Leading Boutique Hotel at the World Travel Awards 2006 and 2007; the World Luxury Romantic Hotel Award at the World Luxury Hotel Awards in 2007; is included in Conde Nast Traveler’s Asia’s Best Beach Spas 2007 and Conde Nast Traveler Hot List Hotels and Spas 2006; and appeared as Conde Nast Traveler front cover in October 2006.
